The 5 Brainwave Frequencies

During relaxation and meditation, the frequency of your brainwaves slow from Beta to Theta.

Here’s a handy overview of the 5 different brainwaves we can all experience.

Gamma brainwaves – have the fastest frequency (30 – 100 cycles per second). They pass information rapidly when information is simultaneously processed in different brain areas. They are also the most subtle brainwave.

Gamma was previously dismissed by researchers as “spare brain noise” until the discovery that it was highly active in people experiencing states of universal love and altruism. It’s been suggested that gamma rhythms regulate perception and consciousness, and that an increased presence of gamma waves relates to expanded consciousness and spiritual connection.

Beta waves – have a high frequency (13-30 cycles per second). They’re present in our normal waking state, when we’re alert and engaging externally with our environment with the conscious mind.

Alpha waves –  have a lower frequency (8 -13 cycles per second). They’re present when experiencing a quiet flow of thoughts and some meditation— when you’re restful, fully present and in the NOW of the moment. Calmness and focus increase, as well the sense of Interoception. It aids overall mental coordination, calmness, presence, and learning.

Theta waves – have a lower frequency than Alpha waves (4-8 cycles per second). In Theta, Interoception and Pratyahara take place (the senses and mind withdraw from external distraction— to focus on the internal workings of the body and mind).

Theta waves are present when we’re relaxed. The theta state opens the conscious critical faculty between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind – enabling deep insights, creative ideas, and streams of consciousness to occur. It is for this reason that many people experience insights and understandings, while they are taking a shower or driving.

Delta waves – have the slowest frequency (1.5 – 4 cycles per second). They’re usually experienced during deep meditation and deep sleep.
